Waiting, waiting, waiting

Nothing happened at last year's trading deadline.

Aside from the Ray Allen and Zach Randolph trades and the Lewis signing, nothing much has happened this offseason yet. There's so much pent up pressure for major player movement, that it just feels like the whole thing is about to burst.

Eric Weiss has a comprehensive article over at Celticsblog which reminds everyone that there's still a lot of huge names poised to be moved: Jermaine ONeal, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Kirilenko, Camby and others.

The Chinese and Milwaukee are locked in a standoff that absolutely looks like Yi is going Steve Francis and forcing a trade.

In other words, there are still lots of teams that are committed or nearly commited to making major deals in the offseason. The Celtics are one of them. With the Ray Allen deal, Boston is no longer in a position to be patient; they HAVE to make another move now- or by the next trading deadline at the latest.

So this should be fun.

One other thing- it's highly likely that when the first monster trade comes down, that will open the gates for a few more megadeals to happen immediately afterwards. Everyone's waiting, seeing what they can get.

Someone will blink, and then there will be mayhem.

I think that C's could make a minor deal for a quality veteran PG to back up Rondo. Atlanta has a glut of PGs (four) so I'm sure they'd be willing to give up either Anthony Johnson or Speedy Claxton for a Scalabrine and Powe. Or maybe Powe and a 2nd rounder next year. Johnson is 32, but he's got two years left in him to play 17 mpg and more if Rondo is injured.

As for our need of another center. I'm hoping we don't pick up Camby. He's 32, only 11 months younger than Ratliff, and he gets hurt a lot. Let's see how Ratliff does, but also sign Olowokandi to another one-year deal. He likes it in Boston and we could use his six fouls. He's a legit center, and he didn't take anything off the table when he played, he just didn't really bring anything to it. I like having Perkins/Kandi/Ratliff at center, and then if Theo works out GREAT, if not then trade him in Jan/Feb.

That Atlanta point idea is not far fetched, but I think the Celtics would go after Lue. Doc Rivers loves him. Did Doc coach him in Orlando?

Oy. Just because a player jumps around and waves his arms a lot (and grabs offensive players) doesn't make him a good defender... not that you said Lue was good defensively.

I just see Lue as another small PG with a suspect jump shot (he's just more confident taking them so that's why he makes more than Rondo, because he takes more).

I think Anthony Johnso is a big, veteran PG who on occassion can light it up. In the 2006 playoffs he scored around 40 points (against the Nets?) as he was the go-to guy on that Indiana team that series. He's crafty and can grab sneaky offensive rebounds too. I just think he's a different look at PG that will make opposing teams adjust. He's probably equal to Lue in terms of being a mentor, so let's call that part a wash.

At least Speedy Claxton would be a guy who Rondo could pattern his game after, or at least Speedy's game a few years ago. He's got a better J than Lue too and I think is better defensively.

Plus, I think you could get AJ or Claxton for less than Lue. Lue started when healthy so Atlanta probably wants him to mentor Law.

Oh yeah I agree. I'm not crazy about Lue, but Doc was just raving about what a wonderful guy he was after one of the Atlanta games last season, and said how much he'd love to coach him again.

Doc LOVED him!!

Let's just buy Doc a few gift certificates to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse so he can take Lue out to dinner. It sounds like Doc just needs a friend, not a PG. So maybe that will keep him from trying to trade for him.
